Good agricultural practice

Certification of the Global GAP standard is a voluntary confirmation for producers and cooperatives who want to demonstrate that their products are safe and that by using modern technologies and techniques, harmful impacts on the environment are minimized, while increasing yield and product safety.

The Global GAP standard has a systematic approach to good agricultural practice and aims to reduce the use of pesticides and fertilizers in the cultivation of fruits and vegetables intended for human consumption. The Global GAP standard includes various certification categories in agricultural production. The Global GAP Fruits and Vegetables module is the most widely applied category of the Global GAP standard. It is applicable to all producers of agricultural products from farms and cooperatives.

Agricultural producers can be certified in two options:

Option 1: An individual producer registers their farm/company, hectares, and agricultural products, and after successful certification, obtains a Global GAP certified product for marketing.

Option 2: A group of producers (e.g., cooperatives and associations) registers with a main representative of the group, along with all the farms/producers in the group, including all agricultural products and total hectares. After successful certification, only the main representative of the group can sell the product and market it. There is no numerical limit on the number of agricultural producers within the group.

The Global GAP standard helps producers improve their agricultural production in terms of traceability, planting material, land protection, pesticide application, irrigation, pest control, and crop protection. By applying all best practices in these areas, the producer influences more efficient primary production and savings, leading to increased yields and secure product placement.

In the European market and with all major retail chains with branded products, the Global GAP certificate is mandatory for the sale of fruits and vegetables. The key goal of the Global GAP organization is the idea that all agricultural producers achieve top quality products and processes, emphasizing food safety, environmental protection, and worker welfare.

The foundations for the introduction and certification of the Global GAP standard, similar to other standards, are based on risk analysis and system verification. Therefore, certification of the Global GAP standard can be done in combination with BRC and IFS standards, which also contain requirements related to food safety.
