FSC™ applies to all wood and non-wood products from forests, such as timber, fibers, pulp, paper, wooden or paper packaging, cardboard, cork, and other related products.
The Forest Stewardship Council™ (FSC™) is a non-governmental founded in 1994 as a voluntary certification for sustainable forestry, promoting environmentally sound, socially beneficial, and economically viable management of the world’s forests. FSC has the most extensive certified supply chain network, enabling connections between markets and sustainable forestry – including over 150 million hectares of forest managed according to FSC standards.
FSC Chain of Custody Certification means that forest supply chain is unbroken for FSC-certified products and supports responsible forestry. It confirms that the forest-based material/product comes from well-managed FSC-certified forests, or other reclaimed or controlled sources. This is checked through independent, third-party evaluations. FSC Chain of Custody Certification means that a certified Organization upholds strict protection for workers’ rights throughout the supply chain. Independent third-party evaluations confirm that the Organization meets FSC’s core labour requirements, which means not using child or forced labour, do not discriminate, and respect and uphold the right to freedom of association and collective bargaining. By choosing FSC-labelled products, you show your commitment to forests and those that depend on them. Independent, third-party evaluations confirm that the forest-based material in FSC-certified products comes from well-managed, FSC-certified forests, and/or recycled, and/or controlled sources. FSC certification mitigates the risk of forest products contributing to illegal logging, human rights violations, and the destruction of critical ecosystems. The FSC Chain of Custody (CoC) certification guarantees the traceability of FSC-certified material throughout the entire production process—from the forest to the end consumer. For products with FSC labels and compliance marks, all entities involved in the supply chain must hold a valid FSC CoC certificate.
FSC CoC is applicable and beneficial in the following systems and sectors:
- Wood processing industries
- Wood industries and trades
- Paper industries and trades
- Publishing houses and printing companies
- Sawmills
