CE mark for steel and aluminum structures

EN 1090 is the international standard for structural steel and aluminum. It establishes parameters for assessing the compliance of product characteristics for steel and aluminum components placed on the market under this standard.

Since July 2014, construction steel and aluminum fall under the Construction Products Regulation (CPR), meaning that product groups made from aluminum or construction steel must carry the CE marking to show compliance with EN 1090.

To place construction products with the CE mark on the market, manufacturers must first certify their products and conduct production process control in accordance with the requirements of the EN 1090 standard. Given the safety risks associated with load-bearing steel and aluminum structures and their components, EN 1090 specifies that the entire production process must be controlled. This means the manufacturer is required to describe and implement production control systems, thereby obtaining a Factory Production Control (FPC) certificate.

Only after obtaining this certificate can the manufacturer issue a Declaration of Performance (DoP) and apply the CE marking on the product for load-bearing steel and aluminum structures and their components. The CE mark proves compliance with safety regulations for products and is a legal requirement for exporting to the EU and many non-EU countries.

To obtain the certificate and CE mark, the following must be controlled:

  • Initial Type Testing
  • Factory Production Control system, including inspection and testing
  • Staff qualifications/competency

Benefits of CE certification for steel and aluminum structures:

  • Ensures implementation and monitoring of production process control systems
  • Certification of product quality and safety, ensuring compliance with directive requirements
  • Increased competitiveness
  • Enables product distribution within the EU and EFTA
  • Confirms compliance with EU legislation
  • Independent third-party assessment and Declaration of Performance

When a product is marked with the CE logo, the consumer/company can be confident that the delivered products meet at least the minimum performance requirements specified in the harmonized technical specification.

Compliance with production regulations enables you to continue producing and selling your products both within and outside the EU. Companies that are not compliant with these standards and trade without a legitimate CE mark could face legal action.
